London Office Managing Partner Christine Braamskamp and Special Counsel Michaela Croft shared their insights on the evolution of pro bono in The Law Society Gazette. They looked back on a number of successful pro bono projects over the past 10 years that the firm has been operating in London, including working with the Homeless World Cup, providing legal support on contracts, negotiations with FIFA, and arranging film rights for a Netflix adaptation.
Christine highlighted Jenner’s recent work with Coram, a children’s charity, in the Covid inquiry. “This was an important pro bono instruction to which we could contribute our legal skills through providing significant preparatory work for the charity to put its case effectively at the inquiry,” she said in the article. “It was also an excellent developmental opportunity for our lawyers.”
“Pro bono is a fully integrated part of firm culture, not a separate programme,” said Michaela in the article. “Associates and partners can bring in causes or charities they are passionate about; these are vetted for conflicts and then supported by the firm.”
Christine co-leads the firm’s Investigations, Compliance, and Defense team, as well as the firm’s Culture Risk and Sensitive Investigations team. She maintains an active pro bono practice and regularly acts pro bono for individuals and frequently advises on matters with organizations such as Legal Action Worldwide, Lawyers Without Borders, and various charities, often with a focus on human-rights related issues.
Michaela advises companies and financial institutions regarding disputes in a broad range of matters, with a particular focus on contractual disputes, as well as fraud and economic tort claims, restructuring and contentious insolvency situations, and shareholder/joint venture disputes. Michaela sits on the firm’s Pro Bono Committee, and her pro-bono practice maintains a strong international nature.
