Pro bono

An unprecedented public commitment. Cases that shape constitutional issues and change lives. Consistent best-in-class recognition.

At the forefront of giving back

Our passion for public service has a storied history that dates back to the 1950s, when Partners Thomas P. Sullivan, Prentice H. Marshall, and Jerold S. Solovy launched one of the first formal pro bono programs. At the time, they recruited dozens of other Jenner & Block lawyers to help them represent indigent criminal defendants in Chicago. Partners Albert E. Jenner, Jr. and Samuel W. Block upheld and cultivated this core value as leaders of the firm that would eventually bear their names.

Since then, Jenner & Block has set the standard in pro bono. We were early champions for sometimes-controversial issues like prisoners' rights and criminal defense, and we continue forging the path, year after year, to help marginalized communities. Investing our time and talent to help others is a defining characteristic of the firm—a true calling.

In2021, we announced a five-year commitment to provide $250 million in free legal assistance because the need for pro bono representation is greater now than ever before. By the end of 2025, we exceeded $400 million in free legal assistance, reflecting a culture where service is central rather than peripheral.

Our pro bono practice is one of the most extensive and embedded in Big Law—defined by large-scale commitments, near-universal participation, and a mix of high-impact litigation and individual representation across civil rights, criminal justice, immigration, and community-focused work.

Our long-standing commitment to public service continues to be a vital part of who we are as lawyers and people. It is at the core of how we recruit and train our lawyers, and of how we measure our professional success. Put simply, pro bono is in our DNA.

Pro Bono Jenner & Block 2025

Where the need is greatest, we are there

We are proud to make a difference through all our pro bono work, whether it involves high-profile impact litigation or directly assisting an individual with a critical legal need. Our pro bono service embraces a wide range of issues, including constitutional battles, death penalty challenges, supporting non-profits and small businesses that form the backbone of our communities, direct legal services to the underserved, and criminal defense work. We are particularly invested in helping those in need access the legal system, including helping undocumented people gain asylum, disabled people access benefits, victims of domestic violence seek orders of protection, transgender people change their names, and veterans challenge a dishonorable military discharge. We encourage our lawyers to bring their passions to work and to pursue pro bono activities that inspire them.

When protests across America exposed massive racial and social injustices, we were there. When reproductive rights for pregnant people were on the line, we were there. When innocent people feared for their lives in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, we were there. And in hundreds of matters for individuals and groups large and small, we are there.

Pro bono inspires careers

Many young lawyers choose Jenner & Block because of our deep commitment to pro bono and public service. Associates do important work while they build key skills—taking depositions, oral advocacy at the trial and appellate levels, structuring transactions—early in their careers.

Client partnerships make a difference

Many of our corporate clients want to help, too, and we provide them with the opportunities and infrastructure to contribute through a partnership with Jenner & Block. Our corporate clients have worked side by side with us on projects involving:

  • Advocacy for immigrants — including DACA application and renewal clinics, asylum cases, naturalizations, U-Visas

  • Criminal matters — including innocence claims, records expungement and wrongful conviction case screening

  • Human rights initiatives — including protection for victims of sex trafficking

  • Legal assistance for small businesses

  • Assistance to individuals and families — including wills and end-of-life planning for seniors, veterans and front-line workers, and access to benefits for children with special needs

Numerous prestigious organizations and publications have recognized our pro bono leadership, including The American Lawyer, the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation, the NAACP, the National Law Journal, the Public Interest Law Initiative, the ACLU, and more.

From serving on boards of national public service organizations to volunteering with local non profit organizations, our lawyers and professional staff engage in community service activities that reflect their interests and passions—both inside and outside the legal arena.
