Eric Einhorn, Former Chief of Staff to US Senator Brian Schatz and Chief of the Federal Communications Commission’s Telecommunications Access Policy Division, Joins Jenner & Block

Eric Einhorn has joined Jenner & Block’s Communications, Internet, and Technology Practice as an Of Counsel  following four years of service as US Senator Brian Schatz’s Chief of Staff.

Eric brings more than 20 years of government and industry experience, including at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to Jenner’s deep bench of litigators, regulatory advocates, economic strategists, and telecom engineers. He is the 14th former government official to join Jenner’s Washington, DC, office in the last two years.

“The interaction of politics and policy in the telecommunications and technology industries has resurrected old debates and created new ones,” said Co-Managing Partners Katya Jestin and Randy Mehrberg. “Eric’s years of experience working at the intersection of law, policy, politics, and business provides him with a unique skillset that will be invaluable to clients as they navigate both challenges and opportunities.”

Since 2019, Eric served as Chief of Staff to US Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii, Chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, senior member of the Senate Commerce Committee, Senate appropriator, and a leading climate champion.  Eric provided legal, policy, political, and strategic advice and contributed to some of the most impactful legislation in recent years, including the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest climate action in American history. He also led operations for the office and campaign, supported Chairman Schatz with management of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and served as the senator’s counsel for the Senate Ethics Committee.

Prior to his Chief of Staff role, Eric was Senior Counsel for Technology and Communications Policy to Senator Schatz, then the ranking member on the Technology and Telecommunications Subcommittee for the Senate Commerce Committee. In that role, he led a team responsible for technology, telecommunications, data privacy and security, competition, and intellectual property policy matters.

“Eric is a seasoned lawyer, public policy strategist, and trusted member of the communications bar,” said Sam Feder, a Co-Chair of Jenner’s Communications, Internet, and Technology Practice. “His multidimensional understanding of federal and state legislative and regulatory processes will be an asset for clients who are facing emerging laws and regulations and seeking to take advantage of new funding opportunities.”

Prior to working in the Senate, Eric held senior roles in telecommunication companies and at the FCC. He led national public policy and government affairs initiatives as a corporate officer for a Fortune 500 internet service provider and served as an Executive Director at an American multinational telecommunications holding company.

At the FCC, Eric served as Chief of the Telecommunications Access Policy Division, Wireline Competition Bureau, which is responsible for the development and implementation of policy, strategy, and regulatory oversight for the multi-billion-dollar universal service program.

“Businesses operating at the intersection of law, politics, and public interest are continuing to experience a dynamic and intense evolution,” said Eric. “Jenner & Block is at the forefront of these changes and the breadth of their work in technology and telecom, Native American Law, energy, and congressional investigations aligns seamlessly with the experience I bring to the firm."

Eric’s arrival follows that of Trey Hanbury, a Co-Chair of the Communications, Internet, and Technology Practice and former Special Counsel at the FCC, and Tom Peters, former Chief Engineer of the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau.
