- Led the defense of a substantial international manufacturing firm in a complex JAMS arbitration in San Diego, centered on claims for breach of a license agreement for technology contained in automobile infotainment systems.
- Represented News Corp subsidiary Move, Inc., as well as the National Association of Realtors and multiple subsidiary companies in a lawsuit against Zillow. The plaintiffs, who own and operate the realtor.com website, brought claims for trade secret misappropriation, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty, among others. The case ended with a $130M settlement on the first day of trial in Seattle, following a five day hearing related to evidence spoliation.
- Led the prosecution of claims on behalf of an Osaka-based manufacturing firm for fraud, breach of contract, trade secret misappropriation, and various business torts against the sellers of a US-based business. The primary case was filed in Manhattan, with the New York Supreme Court. After that court entered a TRO/PI against a group of defendants, discovery confirmed allegations that the target company had been engaged in unlawful business practices before it was acquired. In addition to leading the New York case, Brent represented the client’s interests in ancillary disputes that developed in Missouri, New York, and Michigan, in civil courts, with arbitral bodies, and before administrative agencies. His team also resolved an eight figure R&W insurance claim. The National Law Journal honored the team with a runner-up Litigator of the Week mention after a successful interlocutory appeal before New York's Appellate Division, First Department.
- Secured a $940 million trade secret verdict for Epic Systems Corp., one of the leading health care software companies in the US, in a corporate espionage case against Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). A Wisconsin jury found that TCS, a hired consultant, misappropriated trade secrets related to Epic’s proprietary software. The verdict represents one of the largest trade secret verdicts in US history.
- Defended a California bank in a Los Angeles Superior Court dispute with a competitor alleging the misappropriation of confidential information and breach of various contractual provisions related to the solicitation of employees and clients. The case was settled before trial.
- Represented a Japanese manufacturing firm through a cross-border commercial dispute in South Carolina. The case began when the opposition filed a lien against a factory project. Following a civil action in the US District Court for the District of South Carolina, it ended with a favorable settlement in which that opponent delivered a financial payment to the firm's client.
- Successfully defended the US subsidiary of a Japanese corporation in a cross-border arbitration proceeding sited in New York that focused on clinical research operations in the pharmaceutical industry. The team also successfully resolved several ancillary proceedings related to the arbitration, including a post-acquisition dispute with the former owner of the US business.
- Represented a US defense contractor in a commercial dispute litigation in the US District Court for the Southern District of California. The case focused on the training of US special operations personnel and the State Secrets Doctrine.
- Represented an energy firm in a commercial dispute over contractual indemnity obligations arising from a series of wrongful death actions and a related regulatory investigation. The case was litigated in the US District Court for the Central District of California and settled favorably.
