Partners Brent Caslin and Todd C. Toral were featured in the Daily Journal’s Special Report, “Salute to Veterans 2024.” The special coverage features judges and lawyers with a military background reflecting on how their service influenced their approach to law and justice.
In his profile, Brent discusses what being a veteran means to him.
“It means that most things in life are easy in comparison to what I did during my brief time in the Army. It means I have a group of friends for life who share experiences that are sometimes difficult to describe. It means that, during any movie or television show involving artillery, I feel compelled to identify the piece and describe its functionality to my poor wife and children. And it means I have an obligation to help vets and vet families facing challenges related to their service,” Brent said.
In his profile, Todd discusses how serving as a Marine infantry officer helped him develop traits that have been critical to his success as a lawyer.
“Ultimately, the experience taught me how to exercise sound judgment and make good decisions with limited information and in dynamic situations. I have found that being a litigator often requires the same set of intellectual and physical tools,” Todd said.
Todd also gave insight into what being a veteran means to him.
“I spent most of my 20s in the Marines. I was incredibly blessed to part of an institution formed around ancient ideas of respect, integrity, and the notion that facts matter. In my view, being a veteran rolls up into being and doing something honorable. It's one of the most honorable things I've ever done, and I try to apply the lessons I learned as a Marine to other areas in my life, including the practice of law,” he said.
