Jenner & Block’s Thriving Energy Practice Adds Energy Transactional Partner Niqui Kohli

NEW YORK, NY – Jenner & Block’s Energy Practice added its second partner in recent months, with energy transactional lawyer Raunaq (Niqui) Kohli joining the New York office. Niqui follows John Estes’ arrival in October, and that of Associate Juliana Brint from their previous Am Law 5 firm.

Niqui’s practice focuses on energy regulatory counseling and transactional matters across a wide range of assets, including gas, coal, hydro, solar, storage, on and offshore wind, demand response, transmission, and LNG, on behalf of public utilities, financial institutions, investment funds, independent power producers, and others.

“Jenner & Block’s Energy Practice is unparalleled and we are excited to add a lawyer of Niqui’s caliber to meet our clients’ regulatory and transactional needs,” said Co-Managing Partner and Energy Practice Co-Chair Randy Mehrberg. “The energy landscape is changing rapidly, across both the traditional and renewable sectors, and Niqui will be in demand for clients as they navigate heavily regulated transactions, seek state and federal approvals, and manage risk.”

With a deep understanding of the energy sector, transactions, and corporate governance matters, Niqui counsels clients on structuring and negotiating commercial transactions in the energy space and on securing the required energy regulatory approvals from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), among other regulators. He regularly assists with obtaining energy regulatory approvals at the federal and state levels for high-value energy transactions, guides clients through the regulatory interplay with corporate, tax, and antitrust components of mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, financings, joint ventures and other commercial transactions in the energy sector, and manages risk throughout these complex matters.

"Niqui is one of the brightest and most talented young lawyers that I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” said Partner John Estes. “He has developed a rare blend of energy regulatory and transactional skills that are tailor-made for the increasing number of deals now regularly seen in the energy industry. I’m delighted he’s joining the firm.”

At Jenner & Block, Niqui will play a leading role in expanding the energy transactional practice in utility M&A transactions, gas and electric generation asset transactions, major energy financing and capital markets transactions, including in the LNG industry, and investment fund structuring and governance. Additionally, he will work with the firm’s Transitions in Energy and Climate Solutions (TECS) Practice in connection with renewable energy generation portfolios, as utilities look to align mergers and acquisitions and capital spending plans with their climate change initiatives.

"Jenner & Block’s strong commitment to the energy sector, deep bench of talented lawyers, and the breadth of its clients stood out to me right away and drew me to this incredible team," said Niqui. "I am looking forward to contributing to the continued expansion of the practice across the traditional and renewable energy sectors.”

Niqui earned his LLM from Stanford Law School and his BCL and LLB from McGill University Faculty of Law. He will be based in the firm’s New York office.
