WASHINGTON, DC: Laurel Loomis Rimon, a former federal prosecutor and recognized leader in financial regulatory and enforcement, has joined Jenner & Block as a partner in the Washington, DC office. Laurel will Co-Chair the firm’s Fintech and Crypto Assets Practice.
“We are delighted to welcome Laurel to our growing fintech team,” said Co-Managing Partners Katya Jestin and Randy Mehrberg. “She is a leading practitioner in the digital asset space and has been at the cutting edge of the fintech industry since 2005 when she prosecuted the first digital currency case in the United States. Her impressive tenure in government and private practice will be invaluable to our clients as they face this new era of increased government enforcement.”
Laurel joins Jenner from Paul Hastings where she was a key member of their Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) investigations and fintech practices. She previously Co-Chaired O’Melveny’s fintech group.
Prior to entering private practice, Laurel served as an Assistant United States Attorney and US Department of Justice (DOJ) Trial Attorney for more than 15 years. Her time at the DOJ included service as Head of Litigation for DOJ’s Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section and prosecuting the first case against a digital currency. While at the CFPB, Laurel served as an Assistant Deputy Enforcement Director, where she led complex and sensitive investigations and litigation involving bank and non-bank entities. Her tenure in government included a senior executive service appointment as General Counsel to the Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security, where she led the department’s whistleblower investigations practice.
Laurel’s practice focuses on guiding financial institutions, fintech companies, and digital assets platforms through compliance or enforcement challenges involving anti-money laundering, consumer protection, and federal or state oversight. She is recognized by Chambers USA as a leading lawyer in the category of Fintech Legal: Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies.
“Continued growth in fintech, paired with revitalized enforcement efforts, is creating new opportunities and challenges for businesses transacting in digital assets,” said Partner Jeremy Creelan, a Co-Chair of the firm’s Consumer Brands and Fintech and Crypto Assets practices. “Laurel’s arrival adds to the depth and breadth of our team, uniquely positioning us to support clients who are building their compliance programs and facing complex litigation, investigations, and enforcement actions.”
Jenner & Block’s Fintech and Crypto Assets team represents leading global finance and technology companies in their most sensitive litigation and investigations and provides holistic support to clients across a spectrum of transactions, compliance, trade secrets and IP protection, government strategy, and data security issues. It features a deep bench of former government officials and regulators who have held leading roles at DOJ, SEC, and CFPB and cutting-edge litigators who have shaped the industry while in private practice.
“Jenner & Block has an outstanding reputation and is positioned to be a leader in the fintech and digital assets space,” said Laurel. “I am thrilled to be joining a firm that is known for its high impact work in emerging sectors and to have the opportunity to work alongside lawyers who share my passion for supporting innovators and fintech platforms.”
Laurel earned her JD from Southwestern Law School and her BA from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been a board member of the Association for Women in Crypto since August 2022.
