Jenner & Block files US Supreme Court Brief Supporting Free and Fair Election Maps

Today, Jenner & Block filed a Supreme Court brief in Moore v. Harper, continuing its advocacy for free and fair election maps on behalf of its client, the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters.
Moore v. Harper is an amalgam of three cases arising from North Carolina’s redistricting process this year, where Jenner & Block Partner Zachary C. Schauf successfully argued before the North Carolina Supreme Court that the state legislature’s gerrymandered maps were unconstitutional. As a result, North Carolina’s Congressional elections are proceeding in November under fair maps secured by the Jenner & Block team’s efforts.
Now, the US Supreme Court will examine the question of whether or notstate laws governing federal elections are subject to the constraints written into state constitutions.
“This case is about more than gerrymandering in North Carolina,” said Mr. Schauf. “It concerns a core principle from the earliest days of our Republic – that state laws governing federal elections are subject to the constraints that the people wrote into their state constitutions.”
The brief was filed in conjunction with Common Cause and Rebecca Harper, et al.
The case is part of the Election Law and Redistricting Practice and is led by Partners Jessica Ring Amunson, Sam Hirsch, and Mr. Schauf.
Other members of the team in the US Supreme Court case include Partner David Bradford and Associates Karthik P. Reddy, Leonard R. Powell, Urja Mittal, Illyana A. Green, Carter F. Smith, Sophia L. Cai, and Benjamin T. Hand.
Other members of the team who helped litigate the case in the North Carolina courts included Partners Kali Bracey, Benjamin J. Bradford, Alex S. Trepp, and David M. Greenwald and Associate Mary E. Marshall. Senior paralegal Cheryl Olson and paralegals Thomas Scholtus Adam Weidman assisted. Many others in the firm provided important assistance, including Partners Robert R. Stauffer, David Jimenez-Ekman, and David P. Sanders; Associates Brandon J. Polcik, Huiyi Chen, and Allison M. Tjemsland; Department Counsel Adam M. Caldwell; senior paralegals Daniel Garcia and Theresa Busch; and paralegals Grace Liberman, Sam Rosen, and Kendall Allen.
