The Daily Journal has honored a Jenner & Block team with a 2026 California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year (CLAY) Award for their work in Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria v. California Department of Social Services —a pro bono matter that secured both individual justice and statewide policy change for Native American foster youth.

Jenner & Block successfully represented a former foster youth and member of the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe in Humboldt County, California, who faced homelessness and the loss of critical services. The firm advocated for pro bono clients Madison Fisher and her tribe in litigation against the State of California and Humboldt County, securing $45,000 in compensation and a statewide policy change that will protect Native foster youth throughout California.

On September 18, 2023, a California federal court granted a request to block enforcement of the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (“CAADCA”), a law with the stated goal of protecting children when they are online.

Days before Iowa’s ban on books and “Don’t Say LGBTQ” provisions were set to be enforced on January 1, 2024, a federal district court temporarily blocked those two parts of SF 496, a wide-ranging law that targets LGBTQ+ students and content for erasure in schools.

In partnership with Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Iowa, Jenner & Block filed a lawsuit to block SF 496, a sweeping new law that went into effect this fall in Iowa with wide-ranging implications for LGBTQ+ students’ academic experience, safe school climate, and mental health. The law targets LGBTQ+ youth and requires school districts to ban books.

On September 15, 2022, California’s governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (“CAADCA”). The CAADCA furthers the goals of the California Privacy Rights Act (“CPRA”) and applies to businesses subject to the CPRA.[1]

On August 24, 2022, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a $1.2 million settlement with cosmetics retailer Sephora Inc. (Sephora), the first public enforcement action under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). [1] The settlement resolved allegations that Sephora failed to disclose it was selling consumers’ personal information, failed to honor opt-out requests from user-enabled global privacy controls, and failed to cure these violations within 30 days, as required by CCPA. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of California recently recognized Partner Kirsten Hicks Spira and Special Counsel Wesley M. Griffith as honorees for their commitment to pro bono during the District’s annual “Night to Honor Service.” 

Associates Wesley M. Griffith, Elizabeth Avunjian, and Effiong K. Dampha led a team that obtained a favorable settlement on the eve of trial in a Section 1983 civil rights case.  The civil rights action arose from our client reporting several prison guards for misconduct.  Our client alleged that in retaliation for his report, the guards took him to an isolated area of the prison that was closed for construction and beat him until he lost consciousness. 

On Thursday, December 10, 2020, the Office of Attorney General Xavier Becerra published a fourth set of proposed modifications to the regulations of the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA). Comments to this new set of regulations – which are a combination of changes to the third set of modifications proposed in October 2020 and new proposed regulations – are due December 28, 2020 at 5:00 pm PST. 

Privacy was on the ballot this November, at least in California. And it appears that enough people voted in favor of Proposition 24, the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), for it to become law. Although the CPRA technically becomes effective five days after the California Secretary of State certifies the voting results, the bulk of the law – which is an overhaul of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) – will not come into force until January 1, 2023. On Monday, October 12, 2020, the Office of Attorney General Xavier Becerra published a third set of modifications to the regulations of the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA). The CCPA regulations, last modified on March 11, 2020, became effective on August 14, 2020.
