Jenner & Block Secures Life-Changing Settlement for Native Foster Youth
Jenner & Block successfully represented a former foster youth and member of the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe in Humboldt County, California, who faced homelessness and the loss of critical services. The firm advocated for pro bono clients Madison Fisher and her tribe in litigation against the State of California and Humboldt County, securing $45,000 in compensation and a statewide policy change that will protect Native foster youth throughout California.
Court Temporarily Blocks Iowa’s Book Ban and “Don’t Say LGBTQ” Provision
Days before Iowa’s ban on books and “Don’t Say LGBTQ” provisions were set to be enforced on January 1, 2024, a federal district court temporarily blocked those two parts of SF 496, a wide-ranging law that targets LGBTQ+ students and content for erasure in schools.
Jenner & Block, Lambda Legal, and ACLU of Iowa Challenge Law Targeting LGBTQ+ Youth
In partnership with Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Iowa, Jenner & Block filed a lawsuit to block SF 496, a sweeping new law that went into effect this fall in Iowa with wide-ranging implications for LGBTQ+ students’ academic experience, safe school climate, and mental health. The law targets LGBTQ+ youth and requires school districts to ban books.
