The US Supreme Court today delivered a “complete victory” to our clients and affirmed the 2022 decision of the North Carolina Supreme Court in Moore v. Harper, a consolidation of three cases stemming from North Carolina’s redistricting process.

Today, Jenner & Block filed a Supreme Court brief in Moore v. Harper, continuing its advocacy for free and fair election maps on behalf of its client, the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters.

On June 30, the US Supreme Court granted writ of certiorari in Moore v. Harper, a case arising from the North Carolina General Assembly’s efforts to gerrymander new congressional maps. Jenner & Block represents the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters in its fight for free maps and fair elections, in opposition to the General Assembly’s efforts. 

Jenner & Block represented the North Carolina League of Conservation Voters, which, along with other plaintiffs, argued that the state’s congressional and legislative election maps were unconstitutionally gerrymandered. After the team prevailed in the North Carolina Supreme Court, state courts approved redrawn maps that treat all voters fairly regardless of party, race, or region.

A Jenner & Block team secured a victory when the North Carolina Supreme Court declared that the General Assembly’s gerrymandered Congressional and state legislative maps were unconstitutional beyond a reasonable doubt and barred them from being used in future elections.

Longtime client Patrick Pursley received a certificate of innocence on February 26, 27 years after he was convicted of murder in a Winnebago County jury trial. The state had relied heavily on the testimony of a state ballistics examiner that a firearm attributed to Mr. Pursley fired the bullets and cartridge cases found at the crime scene. New evidence, however, showed conclusively that this firearm was not the one used in the crime. For over a decade, a firm team worked on behalf of Mr. Pursley
