Jenner & Block’s Suedeen Kelly Discusses Greening the US Power Grid at Practicing Law Institute's Energy Law Program

Jenner & Block Partner and Co-Chair of the Energy Practice Suedeen Kelly and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Company Managing Counsel Timothy Lucey spoke on the topic of "Greening the US Power Grid" at the Practicing Law Institute's Energy Law and Practice program. The discussion provided a roadmap for energy companies, utilities, hyper-scalers and other stakeholders faced with the challenge of navigating a complex and shifting legal framework for grid modernization and decarbonization initiatives.
Suedeen emphasized that the accelerated development of AI and data centers is likely to increase costs regardless of how quickly new generation sources can be built. Energy producers will therefore be under pressure to grow supplies without shifting costs to most customers, she added. On the regulatory front, Suedeen examined the factors that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) must consider as it supervises the surge in large load interconnections triggered by new AI and data centers.
Tim Lucey called attention to notable energy-related laws enacted by the California Legislature in 2025 as well as potential areas of focus for the California Public Utilities Commission and other California agencies in 2026.
