Team Secures Asylum for Three Afghan Siblings
News

A Jenner & Block team has secured asylum for three Afghan siblings whose mother and two youngest sisters were murdered by the Taliban in February 2022. The team initially became involved in the matter after the firm took on numerous Afghan Humanitarian Parole (HP) cases following the Taliban’s capture of Kabul. In October 2021, the team began helping the entire family with their HP applications.
After three members of the family were killed, the surviving siblings’ HP applications were granted. Then, in July 2023, the Jenner team submitted voluminous asylum applications for the three youngest surviving siblings. USCIS conducted interviews of the siblings in September 2023, and granted each of their asylum applications in Spring 2024. After a heartbreaking and stressful few years, the siblings are relieved to be able to live safely and pursue their dreams in the United States.
The team included Partner Debbie Berman and Associates Emma O’Connor and Sara Cervantes, with support from former Associate Andrew Cherry, Client Contracts Counsel Michael DeMar, Paralegal Sandra Mielke Gentile, and former Paralegal Taliah Ray.
