Jenner & Block Partners Julie Shepard and Miwa Shoda were named Top Women Lawyers by the Daily Journal, which recognizes the “top performing women lawyers in California.”
Julie’s profile highlights her ability to adapt and innovate in the face of complex litigation challenges and her work to secure a $51.6 million settlement in favor of a group of major motion picture studios in a copyright infringement suit involving the unlawful IPTV piracy service Nitro TV. The judge in this case found the Nitro TV defendants were “willfully engaged in egregious copyright infringement” and that Nitro TV’s “very existence compromised the studios’ business model as well as the entertainment industry itself.”
“There are some cases I have been a part of that have a commonality in themes. There are these bad actors doing bad things that could almost be novels in the sense that both sets of defendants had weaved complicated webs of deceit that we had to unravel and then present to the court,” Julie said in her profile.
“Her impressive track record in tackling complex litigation and pre-litigation matters demonstrates that she is truly a force to be reckoned with,” the Daily Journal writes.
Miwa’s profile highlights her “journey to success,” which is a “story of determination, resilience and adaptability.”
“Shoda faced the challenge of not only learning an entirely new legal system but doing so in a second language,” the Daily Journal writes. “Proving her mettle, she passed both the California and New York Bar exams, making a groundbreaking transition from a visiting attorney to an associate and, ultimately, a partner of an AmLaw 100 firm.”
Her profile also highlights her practice representing multibillion-dollar industries in Japan and her work representing Rakuten in a high-profile dispute against multiple production companies and two individuals.
“Our strategy was to create and accumulate records of their non-compliance of various court orders to ask the judge to issue sanctions and then eventually the punitive damages. It worked,” Miwa said in her profile.
