Jenner & Block Recognized for Pro Bono Environmental Support at CAWC’s Annual Fundraiser

On March 8, 2023, Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC) held its ”Leading for the Future” event where Jenner & Block was recognized for its contributions to The Open Door Project – a campaign to fund a care facility offering trauma informed services for Chicago’s domestic violence survivors.
In 2022, CAWC found a former industrial/commercial property in Chicago where the facility could be built. CAWC retained an environmental consultant to conduct the environmental due diligence study, but because the property and the broader neighborhood had a history of industrial activity, the consultant recommended a more extensive Phase II investigation. CAWC then sought Jenner & Block’s help with that Phase II investigation. Of Counsel Andi Samuels Kenney reviewed the results and recommended limited additional sampling to confirm there were no environmental concerns. Fortunately, the additional sampling did, in fact, confirm the site was within Illinois cleanup standards and safe to be developed for residential use. With Andi's help, CAWC can now move forward with its plans to build a new facility that provides shelter and services to women and children in need of refuge from domestic violence.
