"Calling All Lawyers to Protect the 2024 Election," New York Law Journal
In her role as President of the New York City Bar Association (Bar), Partner Susan Kohlmann shared her insights with the New York Law Journal regarding protecting the 2024 election in the face of threats and the role of lawyers to that aim.
The Bar recently hosted a virtual program titled “Safeguarding the 2024 Election: The Role for Lawyers” that explored timely themes such as the nonpartisan nature of election protection. Panelists—including Jeh Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security in the Obama administration, and Ben Ginsberg, who defended George W. Bush in Bush v. Gore—emphasized that defending the right to vote and the justice system that protects that right transcends party affiliation and political inclination. The opinion piece cited the increasing levels of disinformation and resulting distrust of the electoral system among the most serious threats to democracy, with the call to action for lawyers to do what they do best: speak up.
“As officers of the court and stewards of the rule of law, it is our obligation to meet the moment to protect the upcoming election and, with it, our democracy,” Susan concluded.
The Bar’s webpage “Election Protection Opportunities for Lawyers” provides a resource for lawyers to locate information and links to projects that will be deploying volunteer lawyers nationwide ahead of the November elections.
