Jenner & Block Team Secures Humanitarian Parole for Afghan Family

A Jenner & Block team secured Humanitarian Parole (HP) for an Afghan family that included the widowed sister of an MIT employee and her six children. The team initially became involved in the case after the firm took on numerous Afghan HP cases following the Taliban’s capture of Kabul. In October 2021, the team began helping the family with their HP application, but in February 2022, the employee’s sister and two youngest daughters were murdered in their home by the Taliban, which forced the surviving children into hiding. The mother and eldest daughter worked for the Afghan government before the city fell to the Taliban. All four of the HP petitions were expedited and approved in early November, and the siblings arrived in the US a week later.

Associate Sara Cervantes led the team with supervision from Partner Debbie Berman. Paralegal Kevin Garcia helped the team with filings.

Sara says, “I will carry this with me for a long time, not only because of the heartbreaking tragedy but also because of the remarkable coming-together of volunteers across organizations and disciplines to rescue the surviving siblings and get them home to their remaining family.”
