Firm’s Amicus Brief Continues Effort to Support Optional Practical Training for International Students
News
June 21, 2021
On June 21, a firm team filed an amicus brief in support of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in Washington Alliance of Technology Workers v. Department Of Homeland Security et al. OPT allows recent graduates on F-1 student visas to qualify for one-year work permits. The Washington Alliance of Technology Workers, which is opposed to the program, is a union that alleges in a lawsuit that OPT has forced its members to compete with foreign labor for job opportunities.
The team filed the brief on behalf of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, with 151 public and private universities and colleges representing all sectors of higher education joining the filing. The brief and its diverse, wide-ranging list of supporters demonstrated how colleges, universities, and the economy benefit tremendously from OPT. This is an update to the original brief filed in November 2019.
The non-partisan, nonprofit Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration brings together college and university presidents and chancellors on the immigration issues that impact higher education, students, campuses, communities, and the nation. Law360reported on the filing.
The team writing the brief included Partner Ishan K. Bhabha and Law Clerk Kyle Tramonte. Senior Paralegal Cheryl Olson provided valuable assistance.
