Ryan earned his JD from The University of Chicago Law School, where he served as comments editor of The University of Chicago Law Review and received the Donald E. Egan Scholar Award, given to students who demonstrate leadership potential in the legal community and a reputation for integrity and fair dealing. As a student attorney in the school's Federal Criminal Justice Clinic, Ryan helped represent indigent defendants in federal court at the trial and appellate level. He also served as co-president of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.
