Lawrence McMahon advises clients at all stages of civil litigation and government inquiries, with a focus on financial services, commodity markets, and cryptocurrency. Lawrence has represented clients in inquiries from numerous agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and against private plaintiffs. He also has extensive experience with monitorships in the commodities and financial services spaces, having advised both a monitor and a monitored entity. Additionally, Lawrence maintains an advisory practice, counseling US and international exchanges, FinTech platforms, and market participants on regulatory risk and compliance under US securities and commodities laws, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations. Lawrence has a wide-ranging pro bono practice, which has included US federal litigation at the trial and appellate levels against the alleged perpetrator of extrajudicial killings during El Salvador’s civil war.
Lawrence clerked for the Honorable Robert E. Bacharach on the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Before becoming a lawyer, he served in the communications bureau of a large nonprofit organization, and he taught Middle Eastern and European colonial history at Georgetown University.
