Bowen earned his JD from Columbia Law School, where he was executive articles editor of The Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts, an Arts and Entertainment Law teaching fellow, and a legal extern at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Before law school, Bowen worked as an editor at a major book publisher in New York City.
