Sports and Gaming Practice Profiled in Law360’s Practice Group of the Year Feature

Jenner & Block’s Sports and Gaming Practice was profiled in Law360’s Sports & Betting Practice Group of the Year feature.
“Jenner & Block LLP helps its clients navigate critical moments, including guiding Caesars to victory over a change-skimming lawsuit and engineering a multibillion-dollar sports betting arbitration win for Fox FSG Services in a spat with FanDuel, earning the firm a spot among Law360's 2023 Sports & Betting Groups of the Year,” the profile says.
In the profile, Co-Chair of the Sports and Gaming Practice Wade Thomson discusses the firm’s history of representing casinos in critical matters. “We’ve dealt with huge investigations and difficult litigation. That’s where we are more involved for our clients.”
For our gaming clients, Wade says that the key to successful representation is “being aware there is always a third party involved in any gambling litigation — the regulators.”
“Regulators are a party to all the moves you are doing, whether formally or informally. It adds a separate dimension,” Wade said.
The profile highlights Co-Chair Carissa Coze’s work advising PointsBet, the seventh-largest US sports betting operator, in the $225 million sale of its US business to a subsidiary of Fanatics, the largest sports and collectibles licensee in the world.
“All sports betting deals were challenging because of the constantly evolving regulations,” Carissa said. Fanatics was “trying to enter the sports-betting world based on their brand recognition. We were trying to make sure the deal we did with them accomplished that,” she added.
The key to any transaction is meeting with attorneys on the client side to “discuss business goals,” and to find out “what’s important to them and what they want to accomplish,” Carissa said.
A strength of Jenner & Block’s Sports and Gaming Practice is “its robust knowledge and relationship with Native American communities,” Wade said. “That can be important in the world of gaming, as many gambling and sports betting venues are located on land within American Indian reservations.”
