Reuters Names Jenner & Block Co-Managing Partner Katya Jestin a “Pro Bono Hero”
Recognition
February 4, 2022
Reuters named Co-Managing Partner Katya Jestin and J. Wells Dixon of the Center for Constitutional Rights as Pro Bono Heroes for their work representing Guantanamo Bay detainee Majid Khan.
Mr. Khan, who has cooperated with US authorities, will be eligible for release from Guantanamo as soon as February 2022 pursuant to his plea agreement. At a hearing in October 2021, he testified extensively about his torture by the CIA, the first time a high-value Guantanamo detainee has spoken in a public about such torture. Seven out of eight jurors at his US military commission sentencing, all senior military officers, described his treatment as a “stain on the moral fiber of America.”
In an interview with Reuters, Ms. Jestin said her decision to represent Mr. Khan stemmed from her belief in the rule of law and her commitment to human rights.
