Law360 Names Three Jenner & Block Practices as “Practice Groups of the Year”

Law360 has recognized three firm practice groups in its annual “Practice Group of the Year” series: Cannabis, Government Contracts and Grants, and Media & Entertainment.

In its announcement, Law360 honors “the attorney teams behind litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.” Jenner & Block is one of 91 law firms that rose to the top among nearly 900 submissions.

For two consecutive years, Jenner & Block’s Cannabis group has earned “Practice Group of the Year” for representing leading US and Canadian cannabis companies in connection with their most important transactions and disputes. The group handled successful securities class actions for two of the largest cannabis companies in North America: Aurora Cannabis, one of Canada’s largest licensed cannabis producers, and Curaleaf, a leading medical cannabis operator in the United States. In the Curaleaf case, plaintiff alleged that Curaleaf made misleading disclosures concerning some of its products. The judge dismissed the case without leave to amend – a first-of-its-kind result for a securities fraud class action against a consumer cannabis company. The group regularly represents Aurora Cannabis, leading US multi-state operators and foreign and domestic private equity funds in the full spectrum of corporate transactions.

Our Government Contracts and Grants Practice counted several successful bid protest representations for multiple General Dynamics business units and other clients including a small, disadvantaged veteran-owned small business Medical Place, Inc. The team earned a complete victory in a cost claim matter for SRA International, Inc, part of General Dynamics Information Technology. Highlights also included contributing to government contracts diligence on multiple corporate transactions from small businesses to middle market, to Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, Inc. in its acquisition by Lockheed Martin Corporation.

The firm’s Content, Media and Entertainment (CME) Practice secured victories and successes in several significant matters, culminating in its recognition as “Practice Group of the Year” in the Media & Entertainment category for the eighth time. On behalf of SoundExchange and other music industry clients, the firm obtained a victory in front of the Copyright Royalty Board. As a result, the parties will now earn hundreds of millions of dollars more from streaming royalty revenues between 2021 and 2025. The CME Practice also won a complete victory for ViacomCBS in a $100 million trademark dispute over the title of the MTV reality show “MTV Floribama Shore.” And on behalf of Sony Music Entertainment, UMG Recordings, and Warner Records, the practice won summary judgment on liability for in a high-profile copyright case against Spinrilla – a hip-hop mixtape service – and its owner.

Law360’s profiles of each “Practice Group of the Year” will be published in the coming weeks.
