Jenner & Block has been named a 2024 Energy Practice Group of the Year by Law360, a distinction that recognizes “the attorney teams behind litigation wins and significant transaction work that resonated throughout the legal industry this past year.” Jenner's Energy Practice is led by Co-Managing Partner Randy Mehrberg and Partners Laurie Edelstein and Suedeen Kelly. Laurie, Suedeen, and Partner John Estes discuss the Energy Practice’s 2024 victories in this profile.
In one of the notable victories in 2024, Jenner & Block helped Pacific Gas and Electric Co. structure and execute a transmission leasing deal with nonprofit Citizens Energy Corp. to allow the California utility to tap up to $1 billion in funding to invest in needed electric grid infrastructure in the Golden State.
"Citizens Energy commits to donating a significant portion of its after-tax dollars to charitable contributions, so it's an attractive way and flexible way...for utilities to raise capital," said Laurie.
Jenner’s Energy practice is known for the creative and collaborative thinking it brings to cutting-edge issues in which the law is still developing, and its experience handling a broad cross-section of matters impacting the industry. The Energy Practice works closely with Jenner lawyers across the firm to support the full scope of legal needs for energy industry clients, whether conducting an internal investigation, trying business litigation matters, briefing and arguing cases in the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, navigating tribal issues, or handling significant transactions.
“What we're seeing the industry deal with is a lot of change on the supply side and demand side, and needing to rethink the old world order,” said Suedeen. “So we see that our unique platform, which aggregates different areas of expertise into one energy practice, is positioning us to advise companies on what are really cross-boundary issues.”
