Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago Honors Of Counsel Dan Murray with Lifetime Achievement Award

Of Counsel Dan Murray was honored by the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The award celebrates an individual who “has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the Church and bar.” It was presented to Dan during the 89th Annual Votive Red Mass of the Holy Spirit, traditionally known as the Red Mass, on October 4.

Dan started his legal career at Jenner & Block after earning his JD from Harvard Law School in 1970. In 53 years, he has emerged as a national leader in bankruptcy law, a leader in the community, and a leader at the firm.

Dan’s practice has been highlighted by his involvement in numerous high-profile matters, including representing General Motors Corporation in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy and Tony Valukas, then the firm’s chairman, in his role as the court-appointed examiner in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy. He is a member of the American Law Institute, the American College of Bankruptcy, and the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers.

Dan earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and, since 1996, has taught a class there on corporate restructuring as an adjunct professor. For the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago, he served as president from 2016 to 2017 and remains on its board of governors. He is a board member of the Commonweal Foundation and the Big Shoulders Fund of Chicago, is a life trustee of the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and serves on the national board of advisors for the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Center and its Common Ground Initiative.

At Jenner, Dan has served as chair of the firm’s bankruptcy practice and on various leadership committees. From 1984 to 1986, he was the firm’s managing partner.
