Two Jenner Alumni Nominated to Federal District Courts

Congratulations to Jenner & Block alumni Amir H. Ali and Judge Sunil R. Harjani on their nominations to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, respectively.

Ali was an associate in Jenner’s Washington, DC, office from 2013-2017. He secured his first victory before the US Supreme Court as a fifth-year associate at Jenner, a 7-1 win in Welch v. United States. He has been President and Executive Director of the MacArthur Justice Center since 2021 and Director of the Criminal Justice Appellate Clinic at Harvard Law School since 2018.

Judge Harjani was an associate at Jenner from 2000 to 2001 and 2002 to 2004. He also practiced federal civil litigation as a senior counsel at the US Securities & Exchange Commission from 2004 to 2008. He has been a United States Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Illinois since 2019.

Ali and Judge Harjani are the latest Jenner alumni to be nominated by President Biden, following the 2023 nomination of Washington, DC, office alumna Nicole Berner to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Jenner & Block’s lawyers have a long and proud history of public service with a number of alumni serving on the bench, including former US Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.
