Jenner & Block Partners David Singer and Julie Shepard are recognized as 2024 Top Intellectual Property Lawyers by the Daily Journal. The award honors the “top performing intellectual property attorneys working in patent litigation, trademark, and copyright.”
David’s profile highlights his role as Co-Chair of the firm’s Content, Media, and Entertainment Practice and his work on copyright infringement cases, which he describes as “a staple of my work.”
“Since the ‘Peak TV’ boom in television and films content, he has defended many film studios and networks against infringement cases. For example, in September he won the dismissal of a somewhat unusual lawsuit by a woman who claimed her memoir was the source for the character Cookie on Empire,” the profile said.
David’s profile also highlights his work on matters involving trade secrets, First Amendment, right of publicity, antitrust, and his work advising a sports betting technology company about micro bets and whether IP rights can protect statistics from games in progress.
“When you start layering in the world of sports betting and all of the commerce and money that goes along with it, it’s like injecting adrenaline into this IP issue,” David said.
Julie’s profile highlights her work securing a judgment of $51.6 million for a group of major film studios accusing Nitro TV of pirating movies and $52.5 million for a Japanese e-commerce company that invested about $23 million in two brothers’ film production companies.
The profile also focuses on Julie’s upcoming trials this year. In one, she represents StudioCanal, which had licensed the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the 2015 film "Legend" to Cross Creek Pictures. "They have not paid one penny," she said about Cross Creek.
In her second, she is defending podcast company Wondery in a breach of contract suit brought by comedian Bobby Lee. Her client properly terminated Lee and his TigerBelly podcast pursuant to the morals clause that TigerBelly agreed to be bound by, particularly given the public outrage that arose with respect to a story that Lee told.
"It was beyond the pale in my client's view," she said.
