Jenner & Block Partner David Singer was recognized as a 2025 Top Intellectual Property Lawyer by the Daily Journal for the second year in a row. The award honors the “top performing intellectual property attorneys working in patent litigation, trademark, and copyright.”
David’s profile highlights his over 25-year career navigating the complex terrain of intellectual property litigation, where he found his professional passion at the crossroads of law and creative media.
“My goal was always to figure out how to practice law and be immersed in movies, television, books, newspapers, video games, and technology. And everything clicked when I took my first copyright class in law school,” David said.
Throughout his career, David has had a deep engagement with copyright law’s fundamental tensions. Having represented both plaintiffs and defendants, he appreciates the balancing act inherent in the Copyright Act.
“I love how the Copyright Act has twin goals that are often in tension—encouraging creativity by rewarding authors and creators, but also ensuring that ideas and facts can be the building blocks for new expression,” David said.
His recent significant achievements include cases where he has defended social media platforms and app stores under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
“Section 230 has faced a lot of criticism over the years. But I’ve always felt that Americans don’t give it enough credits. It’s not a perfect statute, but without Section 230, the internet would be unrecognizable today,” David said.
As for effective litigation, David says, “It’s important to make your case forcefully. But it’s also important to litigate with empathy and for me to always reflect the core values of the clients I represent.”
