The Daily Journal recognized Jenner & Block Partner David Singer as a Top Antitrust Lawyer for the second year in a row. The list features California’s best lawyers who focus on matters such as unfair competition and price-fixing.
David’s profile highlights his representation of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and its owners in a closely watched antitrust case between Las Vegas news media rivals. When discussing the significance of the case, David describes how the media landscape has evolved and how consumers have more choices for consuming news than ever before.
“One of the most interesting things about the Las Vegas Review-Journal antitrust litigation is that it’s a relatable story about competition in the United States. Against that backdrop, it is remarkable that the plaintiff in our case continues to insist that print newspapers face zero competition from any other source,” he says.
David’s profile also highlights his win in an antitrust lawsuit before the Seventh Circuit in a case where our client was accused of conspiring to inflate the price of catheters and syringes.
“Working on antitrust cases involving healthcare can be especially challenging because of the unique complexities in the healthcare industry. Combining a complex industry with an already complex body of law can cause a lot of confusion. But unpacking and simplifying the way a client’s business works, and helping courts completely understand your case – and the applicable antitrust principles – in real-world, practical terms, is very satisfying,” he says.
As for trends that will need to be addressed in the near future, David observes that “there have been massive changes in distribution models for sports telecasts, legalization, and regulations of online sports betters, and litigation over student athlete compensation. There are lots of very big players in this space. And lots of start-up businesses and disruptive new business models. So, I think this will be one of the hottest antitrust areas over the next few years.”
