Daily Journal Features Kirsten Spira’s Ethics Committee Leadership
News
June 22, 2021
On July 1, Partner Kirsten Hicks Spira will begin her one-year term as chair of the Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee (PREC) for the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
A recent Daily Journal profile noted Ms. Spira’s “ambitious agenda to help thousands of lawyers better serve their clients and stay out of trouble with the State Bar” in leading the committee, whose advisory opinions provide valuable ethical guidance to judges and practitioners in LA County and beyond.
Committee members also review and comment upon proposed State Bar ethics opinions and proposed amendments to ethics rules, and will also propose amendments to professional responsibility rules.
The article highlights the committee’s intent to tackle ethical issues confronting the practice of law. Current issues of interest include the use of social media, conflicts arising from lateral moves between firms, questions about practicing law in one state while based in another state, and analysis of a California State Bar report expected later this year on the ethics of paraprofessionals practicing law in a limited capacity.
A certified malpractice specialist who represents the country’s biggest law firms in professional responsibility matters, Ms. Spira told the Daily Journal it was an “easy fit” for her to become involved in the committee.
“It’s really interesting work and I really believe it gives back to the legal community,” she told the publication.
