Lindsay C. Harrison is an associate in the Firm's Litigation Department. She is a member of the Appellate and Supreme Court Practice.
She regularly participates in appellate litigation matters before the federal appellate courts and the Supreme Court in a diverse array of subject matters, including multi-million dollar commercial contract disputes, insurance coverage disputes, and cases involving questions of state and federal constitutional law. She recently argued a case in the Supreme Court, prevailing on behalf of her client in Nken v. Holder (No. 08-681). She also recently represented the Petitioner before the Supreme Court in Kucana v. Holder (No. 08-911).
In addition to her appellate practice, Ms. Harrison frequently represents corporations and individuals in litigation in federal and state trial courts as well as in arbitration, including international arbitration before the International Centre for Dispute Resolution. She also regularly represents the recording industry before the Copyright Royalty Board, including in proceedings to adjust the royalty rate for mechanical and digital phonorecords and to set the royalty rate for satellite digital audio radio services.
Ms. Harrison maintains a substantial pro bono practice. In addition to her recent Supreme Court victory on behalf of asylum-seeker Jean Marc Nken, Ms. Harrison argued and prevailed on Mr. Nken's behalf in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Ms. Harrison also currently represents a death row inmate in Georgia. In addition, Ms. Harrison has also authored a number of amicus briefs in the Supreme Court, including in Kiyemba v. Obama (09-581) on behalf of a group of legal historians and habeas corpus experts, in United States v. Denedo (08-267) on behalf of a group of law professors, in Kimbrough v. United States (No. 06-6330) on behalf of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and in Town of Castle Rock, Colorado v. Gonzales (No. 04-278) on behalf of the National Association of Women Lawyers and the National Crime Victim Bar Association. As a summer associate, she was a member of the Firm’s litigation team that successfully petitioned for a writ of certiorari and obtained reversal of the lower court’s decision in the landmark civil rights case, Lawrence v. Texas (No. 02-102). For her work, Ms. Harrison was awarded the 2008 Albert E. Jenner, Jr. Pro Bono Award.
Ms. Harrison obtained her B.A. in Political Science, Gender Studies, and Cinema-Television from the University of Southern California, graduating summa cum laude and with Honors. She obtained her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she graduated cum laude and served as Executive Articles Editor of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, Executive Technical Editor of the Harvard Women’s Law Journal, and as Co-President of Harvard Lambda. From 2003-2005, she clerked for the Honorable Alan S. Gold on the Southern District of Florida, and in 2006, she clerked for the Honorable Rosemary Barkett on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. While clerking, Ms. Harrison taught a year-long course on Legal Research and Writing and a seminar on Civil Rights Litigation Strategy at the University of Miami Law School, where she was a Law Lecturer and Visiting Scholar.
Ms. Harrison is admitted to practice in California and the District of Columbia.
