Christian E. Kimball is a partner in Jenner & Block’s Chicago office. He is Co-Chair of the Firm’s Tax Practice. Mr. Kimball has extensive experience with all aspects of the federal income tax, especially in the context of buying and selling businesses, purchasing and issuing financial instruments, forming, investing in and doing business through corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and S corporations, and evaluating and resolving controversies related to tax matters.
From 1998 through 2002, as Chief Legal Officer for Bcom3 Group and the Leo Burnett Company, Mr. Kimball managed a merger with The MacManus Group to form Bcom3, a $500 million private equity placement with Dentsu, Inc., a Japanese company, and the $3 billion merger in which Bcom3 Group was acquired by Publicis Group S.A., a French public company. During the same period Mr. Kimball managed more than 50 transactions per year—acquisitions, investments and joint ventures—throughout the world, in which Bcom3 Group invested its own capital.
From 1993 to 1998, Mr. Kimball was an Associate Professor at Boston University School of Law where he taught federal income tax, partnership tax, international tax policy and the taxation of financial instruments. He is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Chicago-Kent College of Law LLM program, teaching a course on the taxation of financial instruments.
Before teaching at Boston University, Mr. Kimball was a Kirkland & Ellis partner in the firm’s tax practice. While at Kirkland & Ellis, Mr. Kimball provided tax advice and counsel on all aspects of federal income tax.
Mr. Kimball has co-authored a book on the tax aspects of forming a corporation, published articles on the tax treatment of convertible debt and options, and has spoken on numerous subjects related to federal income tax.
In 2005, 2006, and 2007, Chambers & Partners USA named Mr. Kimball one of the country's leading tax lawyers. He was elected by his peers as an Illinois Super Lawyer in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in the area of tax law, and in 2007 and 2008 he was named to Who's Who Legal: Illinois in the corporate tax area.
Mr. Kimball received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1983, with honors and Order of the Coif. He received a B.A., magna cum laude, in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1979.
