Steven R. Trybus is a partner in the Firm's Litigation Department.  He is a member of the Intellectual Property and Technology Litigation Practices.  Mr. Trybus is AV Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.

Mr. Trybus has represented both Fortune 500 clients and smaller companies in complex intellectual property disputes involving a wide variety of technologies including polymers, petroleum refining, chemical processes, catalysts, plastic packaging and containers, drug delivery systems, pharmaceuticals, various medical devices, consumer products, electronics, software, microprocessors, LCD displays, optical media, metal alloys, media distribution, financial services and business methods.  He counsels clients about a wide range of intellectual property issues with a particular emphasis on patent litigation and related counseling. 

His recent work includes representation in litigation and counseling for a leading health care company, a consumer products manufacturer, a metals manufacturer, a media distribution company, and a leading plastic packaging company, in various patent infringement disputes.  This representation included conducting a two-week jury trial in Delaware District Court to a favorable conclusion for the plastic packaging company.

Mr. Trybus has significant experience in contested proceedings in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), including patent interferences, and reissues and reexaminations often associated with companion litigation.  Mr. Trybus counsels clients regarding world-wide protection and enforcement of intellectual property and has experience coordinating foreign proceedings including patent oppositions. 

Mr. Trybus also counsels clients about the protection of patent, trademark and copyright interests, infringement of those property rights and licensing issues.  He has experience in trademark litigation and counseling and copyright litigation and counseling.  He also has experience in various other aspects of intellectual property litigation and counseling including trade secrets, tortious interference, unfair competition and antitrust issues.

Mr. Trybus also has experience defending lawyers and law firms that practice in the area of intellectual property against allegations of malpractice.

Mr. Trybus joined Jenner & Block after 14 years at Roper & Quigg, a nationally recognized patent litigation firm, when all of the attorneys from Roper & Quigg joined Jenner & Block in June, 2004.  He was with Roper & Quigg since it was founded in 1990 when he and other attorneys from the patent firm of Neuman, Williams, Anderson & Olsen split off to start Roper & Quigg. 

Mr. Trybus is a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Mr. Trybus graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science Degree with high honors in Chemical Engineering and obtained his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, with high honors in 1986.  At Chicago-Kent College of Law, Mr. Trybus was a member and then a Notes and Comments Editor of the Chicago-Kent Law Review

He is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, including the Trial Bar, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.  Mr. Trybus is also a registered patent attorney with the USPTO.
