William L. Scogland is Co-Chair of the Firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Practice. Large, publicly held companies seek his counsel on the benefit aspects of merger and acquisition transactions, as well as the benefit implications of bankruptcies and workouts. He counsels large pension plans and investment managers in investments by ERISA plans and has extensive experience in funded welfare benefit plans and all areas of executive compensation.
Mr. Scogland’s practice also includes counseling clients on ERISA fiduciary issues and handling benefit specific transactions. He regularly advises employers on multiemployer plan matters, and, as a member of the Firm’s ERISA Litigation Practice, he consults with the Firm’s litigators on the defense of employers and fiduciaries in complex cases. Mr. Scogland has been consistently recognized in the area of Employee Benefit Law by Leading Lawyers Network and Illinois Super Lawyer. He is AV Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability.
An active member of the American Benefits Council Board of Directors, Mr. Scogland is also a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. From 2000-2007 and 2009, he was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School. In 2006, Mr. Scogland was appointed to a three-year term on the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans, during which he served as both the Council’s Vice-Chair and Chair. The Advisory Council advises the Secretary of Labor and submits recommendations regarding the Secretary’s functions under ERISA.
