American Bar Association Publishes Jenner & Block Redistricting Guide

April 14, 2010
The American Bar Association recently published the book The Realist’s Guide to Redistricting: Avoiding the Legal Pitfalls, Second Edition authored by Washington, DC Managing Partner, Michael B. DeSanctis, Partners Paul M. Smith and Martina E. Vandenberg, and J. Gerald Hebert, Solo Practitioner and Executive Director of the Campaign Legal Center.  This practical handbook walks the reader through the fundamentals of redistricting law and identifies the legal pitfalls that may lie ahead.  The book serves as an invaluable resource for practitioners, legislators, or citizens seeking to understand the redistricting process.

The Realist’s Guide to Redistricting provides analysis essential to understanding the current laws and the Supreme Court trends that will impact the direction of this unique field of law.  The Guide explores topics such as population equality, the constitutional limits on political and racial gerrymandering, and Sections 2 and 5 of the Voting Rights Act.  It is designed to serve as a useful tool to help those engaged in redistricting navigate the complex legal terrain.

On April 30, 2010, Jenner & Block will host "A Look Ahead: Redistricting in 2010," an event co-sponsored by the American Bar Association's Section of Administrative Law & Regulatory Practice to celebrate the release of the book.   Mr. Smith will be joined by Kristen Clarke, Co-Director, Political Participation Group, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., John Hardin Young, Partner, Sandler Reiff & Young, and J. Gerald Hebert in a panel discussion moderated by Associate Jessica Ring Amunson. They will discuss the fundamentals of redistricting law and the issues that make redistricting such a challenging enterprise.
