First Defense Legal Aid Honors Mascherin As Its 2010 First Defender

News
5/28/2010
Jenner & Block Partner Terri L. Mascherin was honored as First Defense Legal Aid’s (FDLA) 2010 First Defender, an award given annually to attorneys who have worked tirelessly in pursuit of justice for all.  The award ceremony took place on May 20, 2010.

Ms. Mascherin has an active pro bono practice which has included successfully challenging death sentences imposed on two men on Illinois' death row, defending challenges to the clemency orders issued by former Illinois Governor George Ryan and defending the wrongfully accused in conjunction with the Northwestern University Law School Bluhm Legal Clinic Center on Wrongful Convictions.  She is a member and past Chair of the Steering Committee of the American Bar Association’s Death Penalty Representation Project, and a member of the Center on Wrongful Convictions.

In 2007, she was recognized as one of the “50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal, which highlighted her successful commercial litigation practice and her lifelong commitment to representing the indigent in pro bono matters.  In June, Ms. Mascherin will become the President of the Chicago Bar Association.

FDLA protects civil rights by providing free legal representation to people taken into Chicago Police Department custody.  Volunteers and staff are on-call 24 hours a day to respond to FDLA’s hotline.  If necessary, those volunteer attorneys are sent to the police station to protect the rights of Chicago Police Department detainees.  FDLA also educates the public about their constitutional rights in “Streetlaw” sessions, which are aimed at preventing citizens from being arrested and charged by the Chicago Police Department.
