Jenner & Block Hosts Women from the Middle East Partnership Initiative

News
5/31/2007
Jenner & Block recently hosted a luncheon to bring together participants of an innovative mentoring program that pairs women from middle-eastern countries and executives from top-tier Chicago corporations and firms.

Nuha Al Bashir, one of the women in the program, is currently interning with the Firm, working for Partner E. Lynn Grayson. Ms. Al Bashir is from Jordan, where she received her Bachelor’s of Law degree.

“This has been a wonderful experience so far,” said Ms. Grayson. “Nuha has had the opportunity to work on some very interesting cases and she has done an incredible job.”

Peggy Parfenoff, Executive Director of the International Visitors Center of Chicago (IVCC), Lou Vitullo, Chairman of the Board of the IVCC, and Anthony Bruno, member of the Board of the IVCC attended the lunch to get feedback from the women about the program and to discuss social and educational events for the women during their time in Chicago. The IVCC is in charge of managing the Chicago Legal and Business Fellowship Program.

The IVCC has planed several events for the women to not only learn about the city of Chicago, but to connect with the local Arab community.  Some of the events include a meeting with CAIR-Chicago (Council On American-Islamic Relations), a reception with the Jordan Sister Cities Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program in honor of His Excellency Senator Akel Biltaji, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and a meeting with the Arab American Bar Association of Illinois.

According to the IVCC, the women will also meet with representatives from NUR Advisors LLP and the Boeing Company and attend a White Sox Baseball game.

The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. In addition to Jenner & Block, Motorola, WW Grainger, Wildman Harrold, Kraft Foods, Baker & McKenzie, and BlueCross BlueShield are sponsoring women from the countries of Bahrain, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Tunisia, and the West Bank.

The Legal and Business Fellowship Program began in March and will conclude at the end of this August and is funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative of the Department of State. MEPI programs are intended to create links and partnerships with Arab, U.S. civil society, and governments to “jointly achieve sustainable reform.”
